If you're familiar with Windows, why not run GrADS DODS on that?
I use it exclusively on Windows with no problems at all, though it was a pretty steep learning curve, and not all the tricks are documented. But that's where this forum can help.

Learning Linux AND GrADS at the same time is a pretty tall order.
Get yourself a Windows version of GrADS DODS and learn one language at a time.

I`ve been reading the plethora of posts in this news group, and i have decided I should give GrADS a try.

I am by no means an expert in linux in fact I know very little, but I have copies of FC3 and FC4 on disk, plus a spare pc I can install these onto.

I`ve been a windows person most of my pc life, enoying the simple point and click life. I guess I should get my hands dirty with some linux.

I want to ingest gfs and nam grib datasets, but the GrADS docs look rather challenging. Putting together a ctl and index file looks confusing enough, if not mind boggling for me!

Also, does anyone know of a GrADS build for FC4 or would I be better using FC3?

Thank you.
Kevin.
