Yes, you can use a newer version of libpng. I have removed that specific dependence from recent versions of the configure script at https://github.com/j-m-adams/GrADS. GRIB2 needs it to support all the methods for compression.

libpng15 is not support on arm64 architecture and for some reason it is required for grib2 support?

checking for main in -lgrib2c... yes
checking for main in -lpng15... no

Can the dependency be swapped to libpng16. Also, a bit confused why libpng is required for grib2 support.
