[gradsusr] variable name error

If I have understood you correctly, you have different datasets for
different variables.

you are opening files one by one without closing the previous one. However,
GrADS looks for variables only in first opened file, unless you ask the
variable using file number. For example, your hgt in  file 2 so you may
have to use hgt.2, instead of merely hgt, which is absent in file one.
