[gradsusr] gxprint not making PNG images

I'm using GrADS 2.1.a1 on a Mac (OS-10.6.8).  The print command gxprint 
seems to work fine for
.ps, .eps and .pdf extensions, but when I try to make a .png file I get 
a file of zero size.  For example,

'sdfopen 
http://nomads.ncep.noaa.gov:9090/dods/gfs_2p5/gfs_2p520131205/gfs2p5_00z'
'd tmp2m'
'gxprint test.png x1024 y768'

gives a file called test.png of size zero.  Replacing test.png with 
test.ps, test.eps or test.pdf all
give proper files.
