try running it first manually with as little defined as possible, that
is let grads assume all the defaults, then start refining the display. I
too have seen that error message because I had the wrong intervals or
gxout settings. Oh, first double check the name of the variables in the
ctl file, these often are something different than what I expected.

Brian, 
I'm not sure why you get undefined values for those downloaded
variables, but you may consider as an alternative accessing the NARR
directly with sdfopen.

For example:
ga> sdfopen
http://nomads.ncdc.noaa.gov:80/dods/NCEP_NARR_DAILY/201207/20120715/narr
-a_221_20120715_0000_000
