[gradsusr] Question on polar GRIB2 data in southern hemisphere

Hi:
I am creating GRIB2 data for polar projected data in the southern hemisphere, but something has gone wrong and I can't figure out what. I can do this fine for the northern hemisphere, but not the southern.
Here is what I am seeing... Both grb2ctl.pl and the underlying wgrib2 say that it's in the northern hemisphere, but when I use the wgrib2 to go directly to the octet that hold the projection center it shows a value of 1 which means southern.
