[gradsusr] how to plot graph

To whom it may concern,
I am a new Grads user,
1) I have tried to plot a line/bar graph using command "set gxout line/bar" "d variable" but it only shows me map. I think I may miss out some other command line. Can you give me links/examples of details on how to plot graphs using Grads.
2) What is a .gs file? How to use it in grads.
