[gradsusr] Unknown GRIB2 index version number 3

Hello Jennifer and Wesley,

Many thanks to you each for your help.

I have the following feedback:

Jennifer - your solution does not work. I did substitute the "-big" option for "-old". I mapped successfully but when GrADS runs, I get the following error message:

"Open Error:  Can't open Station/Index map file 201601210000_arw_wrfout_d01.idx 
  The data file was not opened. 
No Files Open"

Wesley - your solution does work and I can plot some data, but I am getting the following error as well, but suspect a bad GriB file based on an old thread in the GRADS forum about transferring the file via FTP as ASCII not BINARY. As my file is locally generated, this is not the answer:

"*** FATAL ERROR: rd_grib2_msg_seq_file, missing end section ('7777') ***"

  You can also try using alt_g2ctl/alt_gmp.

If you get the recent build of GrADS (2.1.a2+) you can use the “-old” option with gribmap downgrade the index version number so it can be used with older versions of GrADS. Have a look at the usage notes in http://cola.gmu.edu/grads/gadoc/gradutilgribmap.html.

I am running GrADS 2.0.2 which is the last releases that supports the widget options in the scripting language.



However, when I try to open the GrADS file generated by the latest version of UPP in the WRF-UEMS release from SOO/STRC, the above error message occurs.



I have tested all the releases of GrADS from this version onward and the error disappears with version 2.1.a2 or higher.



Does anybody know if there is a work-around for this as I cannot move away from GrADS 2.0.2 until the option to choose the graphics engine is introduced so I can maintain my widget functionality.
