Utah State University seeks a postdoc position in diagnosing extreme
precipitation events. This position will participate in a study that
detects and diagnoses the pattern and origin of precipitation including
rare extreme events and compare simulations from different resolutions.
Background in regional modeling and dynamic meteorology is preferred,
particularly in the area of organized and long-lived mesoscale convective
systems (MCSs).

The relevant scales of MCSs (20 to 200 km) span the range between
parameterized and resolved processes in current climate models runs;
therefore, MCSs are not easily resolved. Most global models do not
realistically simulate the relevant mechanisms and propagation of MCSs.
One research focus of this position is the detection and quantification of
MCS threat by relating the synoptic-scale circulation changes to MCS
behavior. The research also includes development of key metrics for MCSs,
such as indices to identify MCS development and propagation phases across
different outputs of climate models.
Qualification:

A Ph.D. in meteorology, atmospheric or climate sciences received by
September 2016. Demonstrated publication record and programming skills
(NCL, GrADS, FORTRAN, Python, etc.).
