Mike,
Regarding your 2nd request...you can achieve smooth-edge results by using
the -b and -t options with printim or gxprint.  I.e., display your contour
shading then specify the color you want to be transparent with the -t
option.  You can also use shapefiles to mask out areas you don't want
included in the contour shaded areas.
