[gradsusr] binary for wgrib2 for OSX 10.7

I am trying to use the rNOMADS package of the R statistical program to access NOMADS wind direction and speed data, the variables UGRD and VGRD.  Functions of rNOMADS rely on the wgrib2 utility, communicating with it by UNIX pipes.  I've been unable to find a binary of this utility compatible with my OSX 10.7 (Lion) system.  I have wasted about a week of time on a make script from "MacPorts," which I now believe does not work.  Does anyone have a OSX 10.7 compatible binary for the wgrib2 utility, or a working procedure to create one?
