Jonathan,

The syntax for plotting vectors is such that the length/direction are 
based on the first
two arguments while the optional third argument is for color.  Thus, 
this line in your script:

'd skip(a,3,1);skip(b,3,1);skip(c,3,1)'

will plot vectors (length/direction) based on (u,v) that are colored 
based on the values of w.
If you want vectors of vertical motion, and given that you have a 
north-south section,
I believe you want to plot (v,w), or

'd skip(b,3,1);skip(c,3,1)'

Note however that you are likely to have serious issues with scale since 
the horizontal
extent (lat) is much larger than the vertical.
