[gradsusr] Unable To Open Concatanated Regional GEM GRIB2sWith GrADS

Well .. are you setting lon -180 -60 .. or something like that.

If so .. try something like 180 to 300 .. should work like a charm

Or .. change the initial value in the xdef to be -180 (or whatever)

Hi Andrew,

I use the 25km GEM with no problems as well.

Just tried changing the mproj setting from latlon to nps and I'm still
getting the "Data Request Warning: Request is completely outside file
limits" error.

Stumped, truly.

I'm not sure if this is true or even related, but I thought regional
GEMs were in a polar stereographic projection, and if that's true would
that make any difference? I use 25km global GEMs without a problem,

-- side note/thread hijacking...is there any way to convert polar
stereographic to latlon projection?

I should also mention that I was displaying the UGRD10m with 'd

the Request is completely outside file limits/cannot contour grid error.

Greg,

I still got the data request warning error when taking the ABSV variable
out of the big GRIB2 file so, I tried just downloading UGRD10m and
VGRD10m separately and NOT cat'ing them together and then running
g2ctl/gribmap on each and now I getting a separate "Data Request Error:
File number out of range" warning for both UGRD10m and VGRD10m when I
try to open them separately in GrADS.

Here's the grid descriptor file text: http://paste2.org/LgGwD89f

Hi Greg,

I'm going to try leaving out ABSV and then cat the rest of the GRIB2s
like I usually do and see what that does.

Thanks again for all the help!

I'll let you know how it goes...

Aaron,

>From your script it looks like you're grabbing the 15km GEM. The 15km
used to give me the same problem though. If you run g2ctl.pl on the
concatenated grib2 file, it will give you one grid description. The
problem is that I believe that's just based on the first field it
encounters, and there might be another field in the concatenated file
that's on a different grid. I think I download all of those fields
except ABSV, and since that's a derived field, I would suspect it might
be the one on a different grid. I would recommend downloading your usual
files, but leaving them in their separate grib2 files (1 field per
file). Then pick a forecast time and run each file through g2ctl.pl and
see what grid description it gives you. The ctl file generated for the
ABSV file might be different from the others.

If ABSV is the problem field, an alternative to making a separate ctl
file just for that field would be to not download it, and instead
calculate it from the u and v winds.

Greg

Hi Greg,

Thank you very much for chiming in! I've been using the usual
http://dd.weatheroffice.gc.ca/model_gem_regional/10km/grib2/
<http://dd.weatheroffice.gc.ca/model_gem_regional/10km/grib2/>
datasource to
pull the GRIB2s and then run them through g2ctl/gribmap.

Truly stumped right now...
