It worked for me.
g2ctl gfs.t12z.mastergrb2f12 >junk.ctl
(I see that you did this)
gribmap -i junk.ctl
(do not use -0)
grads
Landscape mode? ('n' for portrait): (entered return)
ga-> open junk.ctl
ga-> d hgt200mb
Hint: use gribmap -v -i junk.ctl to see which fields match the ctl file.
