Hi All,

I'm trying to open the MERRA 3-hourly MAI3CPASM.5.2.0 data using GrADS opendap. I want to open multiple days at once to generate time averages, hence I need to create and use a control file I create to open all of the hdf files in the MERRA collection that I am interested in using xdfopen.
I have created the following control file:
_______________________________________________
dset http://goldsmr3.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/opendap/MERRA/MAI3CPASM.5.2.0/%y4/%m2/MERRA100.prod.assim.inst3_3d_asm_Cp.%y4%m2%d2.hdf
options template
TDEF TIME:EOSGRID 248 linear 00Z01JAN1979 3hr
_______________________________________________

but when I go to execute it in GrADS I get the following error message:

[MAI3CPASM.5.2.0]$ grads

ga-> xdfopen test.opendap.ctl
Scanning Descriptor File: test.opendap.ctl
gadsdf: Time dimension TIME:EOSGRID is not an SDF dimension.
SDF Descriptor file test.opendap.ctl was not successfully opened & parsed.

Having this failure I backtracked and downloaded the MERRA data via FTP to my local machine and created a similar xdf control file to access the data on the local system:
______________________________________________________

dset ^./%y4/%m2/MERRA100.prod.assim.inst3_3d_asm_Cp.%y4%m2%d2.hdf
options template
TDEF TIME:EOSGRID 248 linear 00Z01JAN1979 3hr
______________________________________________________

When I run this in GrADS everything works as it should and I can access all the MERRA data. Am I missing something for opendap that I need to include in the xdf control file? Alternatively, has anyone been able to successfully create a xdf control file to read the 3-hourly data from MERRA via opendap?
