The .ctl is a control file. It's a simple text file that tells Grads how to access and setup the display for the data file. The first entry in the control file points to the location of the data file. My guess is you don't have that set properly.

Thank you Jeff.
I have model.ctl, model.dat and as well as model.gmp and model.grb in my file folder though I'm not sure if the latter two are necessary. Yet, I still get the error message after typing in 'open model.ctl', which really handcuffs me from going through the tutorial further. Do you see anything else that could have gone wrong?

There are two files you need. You already have model.ctl, but you need the data file, too. I think it's model.dat.

Hi there,
I have recently begun using GrADS and going through the tutorial section from http://www.iges.org/grads/gadoc/tutorial.htm<http://www.iges.org/grads/gadoc/tutorial.html.>. My concern is getting GrADS to read the descriptor file of model.ctl upon entering 'open model.ctl' in my command line. I understand there can be issue with the file directory that when entering on the script window but after double checking my path name, I can not decipher where it went wrong.
My path name is /Users/jienjerr/Downloads/grads/bin/grads
The graphic output window appears after I have pressed 'enter' following typing my path name but I would get 'Open Error: Can't open description file' in my command window.
Can anyone please help to point out where I've done something wrong?
Thank you.
