[gradsusr] Opengrads in Windows 7

I found that this only works as a solution if you don't have an internet connection. When you are connected to the internet I only could get myself connected by disabling this "loopback adapter".

Greetings,
Herbert

I just got the problem solved. Asking a friend of mine, it turns out I didn't have a loopback adapter installed, so whenever I wasn't on a network, GrADS wouldn't work (no local IP address available, and thus no possibility to communicate with the X server). Installing a loopback adapter solved the problem. That can be done from the Device Manager in the Control Panel. Just choose "Add legacy hardware" from the "Action" menu there, click on Next, then choose "Install the hardware that I manually select from the list (Advanced)" and click Next, choose "Network adapters", then proceed to the next step and wait for the lists to be populated. Choose "Microsoft" as the manufacturer, and finally "Microsoft Loopback Adapter". Let the newly created adapter initialize and that should do the trick.

Best regards,
Hernán

Dear developers and users:
I've experienced something similar that happened to Maat with 2.0.a9.oga.1 on Windows 7. When my computer is not conected to internet, GrADS closes as soon as the landscape mode is selected.
Thanks.

Dear Arlindo + list,

As I experienced the same problems once again with opening Opengrads in Windows 7, I have tried the options below:

1) Make sure your Windows 7 firewall is not blocking the Xming application (it should ask you if it is OK for it to run Xming, and you
should say "yes"). The is the most common problem.

- I checked this and the Xming application is not blocked by the firewall

2) Make sure your download is not corrupted. It is always a good idea to re-download a fresh copy, re-install, and check whether the problem persists.
- done this but it didn't solve the problem

3) I'll need the specific error message you got when it crashed. You may need to start grads from the windows command line (cmd.exe) in order to see the actual error message. When you start it from a the [Programs] menu/Desktop the window closes before you can read what the error message.
- The error message reads: Error in GXSTRT: Unable to connect to X server

4) If you believe Xming is the problem, start grads in batch mode ("grads -b") and let me know if this works.
- this appears to work

The above test I have done with my wireless radio turned OFF! When I turn the wireless radio back on again Opengrads opens without any problem. The conclusion from my side is that Opengrads needs an internet connection to start. I have only experienced this since I migrated to Windows 7. Hopefully, this can change as I also need Opengrads when I don't have an internet connection.

Kind regards,
Herbert

Hi Ali,

It is not windows7 problem. I think it has to do with GrADS. Same happened to me so I switched back to version 2.0.a7.oga.1 and is working perfectly. I pressume you are talking about version 2.0.1.oga.1-win32_supaerpack.exe.

Anybody else experiencing this problem? We have had about 1,600 downloads for this release and this is the first time I hear about this problem; unless issues like this get reported they cannot be fixed. At this point I'll need more information to diagnose the problem as I am not able to reproduce this problem on several Windows 7 machines I tried the 2.0.1.oga.1 superpack on. Please remember,

1) Make sure your Windows 7 firewall is not blocking the Xming application (it should ask you if it is OK for it to run Xming, and you should say "yes"). The is the most common problem.

   Thank you,
