Have you try any of the open grads binaries, there is a way of handling this
kind of X11 problem there (see "Troubleshooting" in the INSTALL file.) Take
a look at:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/opengrads/files/grads2/2.0.1.oga.1/Linux/
Try both x86_64 and i686 binaries. Take a look at the INSTALL file,
installation is simpler than with the COLA binaries. If you have problems,
read the Troubleshooting section of the INSTALL file.
If you would like to build the opengrads bundle from sources I'd start with
the pre-compiled supplibs as described here:

Even when the grads binaries do not work, the pre-compiled supplibs tend to
work. YMMV.
