[gradsusr] Command produces a PNG image with transparent color 0 and a background image NE.png

At this it does handle the background image automatically, you will need to
use image magick to blend the 2 images.

Read the manual, you can use the pnquant pipe to produce much smaller file
sizes with virtually no quality loss.
