[gradsusr] Help with dating output

Maybe I misunderstand the question, but there are quite a few "query" 
commands in grads
that you might find useful.  You could use by capturing that info
and then writing a string or title:
  q attr     Returns global and variable attributes for an open file
  q ctlinfo  Returns contents of data descriptor file
  q dims     Returns current dimension environment
  q time     Returns info about time settings
