Displaying Compound Variables

I tried the following with no success:

'sdfopen uwnd.2001.nc'
'sdfopen vwnd.2001.nc'
'set gxout shaded'
'set t 1'
'define uwnd=uwnd(t=1)'
i=2
count=1
While(i<5)
    count=count+1
    say count
   'set t 'i
   uwnd = uwnd - uwnd(i-1)
*    V.count=vwnd.2
*   'd U.count'
    i=i+1
endwhile
what am I doing wrong here?

Thanks,

Jason
