[gradsusr] Problem with basemap.gs

The basemap.gs downloaded from ftp://grads.iges.org/grads/scripts/basemap.gs does not have a full directory path to the ASC files.

If you put them under /usr/local/grads then edit the basemap.gs lines 92 to 99; otherwise, the script will expect to see them in your current working directory.

Thank you. I see my mistake. The files must be under
c:/openGrADS/Contents/Resources/SampleDatasets.

The message "Can't open binary data file" means that the file can't be opened
-- it doesn't mean anything is missing. Check the path.

DSET ^foo.dat -- GrADS will look in the same directory where the descriptor
is located
DSET foo.dat -- GrADS will look only in the directory where it is running
DSET /full_path_to/foo.dat -- The best way to be sure that GrADS will open the
file you want

If you are still getting the "Can't open binary data file" message, and you
are sure the path is your DSET entry is correct, it means GrADS doesn't have
read permission for the file in question, or it doesn't exist.

Also, with GRIB files, make sure you have run gribmap to create the index file
before opening the descriptor file with GrADS.

    Dear colleagues,
I just have installed an opengrads version
grads-2.0.a9.oga.1-win32_superpack.exe
on my laptop using Windows XP Version 2002 Service Pack 3.
I have dowloaded the model.grb, model.gmp and model.ctl files from the Grads
tutorial.
Everything seems to be working fine.
After that I took some other grads ecmwf.ctl and ecmwf.dat files which I am
able to use on my Linux machine and tried working with them.
The system response was as follows
Open Error: Can't open binary data file
    File name = ecmwf.dat .
Please advise me what esle must be installed.

You should have two environment variables set that point to where you have
installed your GrADS files. In my case, these are:

GADDIR=/lib/grads
GASCRP=/lib/grads/scripts

Check your installation, they may be under /usr/local/lib/grads and
/usr/local/lib/grads/scripts

Dear Ismaila,

You have to download polygons files (*.asc) from here:

ftp://grads.iges.org/grads/scripts/

And put them on your GrADS directory (eg /usr/local/grads/)

Regards,
Matias

The paths to the ascii files that the basemap.gs needs are specified
in the basemap.gs script itself. GrADS won't look in the directory
specified in the GADDIR environment variable. Download the .asc files
that are needed from ftp://iges.org/grads/scripts/, put them
somewhere, then update the script with the path of your preferred
location.
