g2ctl and wgrib2 problems

Hi

 I am trying to get the g2ctl script to work under opensuse 11.1.
 I downloaded wgrib2 directly from cpc.ncep.noaa.gov and established that it does work is in my path etc.
 It runs fine on a nww3 file eg:

>wgrib2 -ctl_inv nww3.t18z.grib.grib2
1:0:WIND 1,0 0,2,1 none Wind Speed [m/s]
2:41554:WDIR 1,0 0,2,0 none Wind Direction (from which blowing) [deg]
etc .....

But if I try using g2ctl i get the following

wam/wave.20091013> /work/Gradsextra/g2ctl.pl nww3.t18z.grib.grib2

*** FATAL ERROR: unknown option -ctl_ens ***

Big problem:
  either nww3.t18z.grib.grib2 is missing or not a grib file
  or wgrib2 is not on your path or wgrib2 is too old
  or can not write to /tmp/g15864.tmp (full disk or permissions).

  or can not write to /tmp/g15882.tmp (full disk or permissions).

In Line 42 of g2ctl I have pointed to wgrib2 in the right place, and its in may path ie 
$wgrib2='/usr/local/Grads/bin/wgrib2';

Which is the latest available and seems to work

> /usr/local/Grads/bin/wgrib2
wgrib2 v0.1.7.2.oga.1 wesley ebisuzaki, Jaakko Hyvätti, Karl Pfeiffer, Manfred Schwarb, Kristian Nilssen, Sergey Varlamov

 Built Thu Mar 20 11:46:55 EDT 2008 for i686-pc-linux-gnu

Finally my disk is not fiull and I have write permission.

Anyone have some ideas where I am going wong and have some suggestions.
