difference between d u;v and d u;v;w

Hi, everyone!

Can anyone tell me the difference between d u;v and d u;v;w?

BTW, When I plotted the global U-V wind field, the U-V values of some places were so large that
the others with small U-V values were invisible. Is there any method which can overcome this problem?

Any suggestion is welcome!
