Are you using PDL for your float point data? You can see examples in Gerl
source code on how to write binary files:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=161773&package_id=256759&release_id=574264

I am not sure what you need, but you can write single variables to a file
and read them in grads with the ipc_load() extensions. Take a look at

     http://opengrads.org/wiki/index.php?title=Perl_Interface_to_GrADS

Note: Gerl does not work with mod_perl, make sure your cgi script is using
/usr/bin/perl. This can be fixed, but it has not been a priority for me
because I have switched to python.
