Removing grid boxes on display

Dear all,

       By using set gxout grid, grid boxes with printed values are displayed.  May I know how could I remove these grid boxes so that only grid values are displayed ?  As these grid values are packed close to one another, how could I space them out nicely (something similar to skip, say for mean sea level pressure) so that the values are readable ?
