Better hires maps

Last time I heard, the shapefile extension in v1.9.0-rc1 still has some 
bugs in it. Has it been updated?

BTW, has anybody out there identified a nice collection of free 
shapefiles?  A recipe on the use of shapefiles would be really nice. 
Nothing fancy, just basic usage and references to good shapefiles. Free 
shapefiles are better, but it would be nice to know about moderately 
priced ones as well.
