One way is to get shapefiles for your region and use the shapefile extension
in v1.9.0-rc1:

BTW, has anybody out there identified a nice collection of free shapefiles?
A recipe on the use of shapefiles would be really nice. Nothing fancy, just
basic usage and references to good shapefiles. Free shapefiles are better,
but it would be nice to know about moderately priced ones as well.
