If you are using  GrADS v1.9.0-rc1, Graziano Giuliani has contributed a
shapefile extension that allows you to use any publicly available shapefiles
for providing maps backgroung and the like. For example,

ga-> set mpdraw off
ga-> d ts
ga-> shp_lines admin98

or

ga-> shp_polyf admin98

Where "admin98" is the ESRI First Level World Administrative Boundaries 1998
freely available from

 http://geodata.grid.unep.ch/download/admin98_li_shp.zip

Besides continentatl lines one should be able to plot a varity of
shapefiles, including lakes, islands, even highways. There are all kinds of
shapefiles freely available on the web, and no file conversion is necessary.

  Please contact me directly if you are interested in beta-testing this
extension. Keep in mind that this extension does not yet work with GrADS v2.
