Display of Vertical Wind component

Hello,

I am very new to grads and have been trying to
visualise output data of vertical wind components.
What exactly does grads visualise here? I have a
mathematical background and am not familiar with
meteorological knowledge, so what do I actually
display when I type "d dzdt" on a domain of y = 4(y
ranging from 1 to 7) and z from 1 to 41? What do the
colored circles exactly mean? Any help or links to
literature on this would be great, thanks for reading.
