help me the IPCC AR4 dada

Dear all
I want to open IPCC AR4 precipitation data over Africa.

I try the follow:
dset ^a.grb
dtype grib
index ~a.grb.gmp
undef -9.99E+33
title a.grb
xdef 57 linear -56.890000 1.875000
ydef 52 linear -33.750000 1.875000
zdef 1 levels 1 1
tdef 1812 linear jan1950 1mon
vars 1
APCP 0 99 total precipitation
endvars

But the result is: all grid undefined.

Anyone knows the format? I am not sure about the bold lines.
I used wgrib a.grb, the last line is:
1812:10894976:d=00121612:APCP:kpds5=61:kpds6=1:kpds7=0:TR=10:P1=0:P2=0:TimeU=0:sfc:anl:NAve=0
Any suggestions?
