changing tick mark interval in date/time axis

I have a time series plotted in a 1d graph and the
tick marks are every 5 years.
I would like to have them every 2 years instead.

But the command 'set xlint' does not apply to a
date/time axis, as specified in the documentation.

1) Is there a way to change the tick mark interval
2) Can I display the years with 2 digits instead of 4
