Hi Wesley and others,

It sure does!  For the record, I wasn't using the latest wgrib &
gribmap which screwed things up.  Of course, the variable table in the
descriptor file is totally off but this can be  fixed manually but
maybe someone has a parameter table for ECMWF at hand to be used with
grib2ctl.pl? -- Just asking.

Thanks to everybody else for hints how to handle these data!
