ctl assistance

I`m going to be installing the windows version of GrADS, non x server version.

I`m pretty confused about the ctl file and also the index file. If for example I downloaded the 12z nam grib from nomads, how would i proceed with putting together the ctl file? Basically enough so I can ingest and plot the grib dataset into a chart.

The documents only seemed to brush over this topic. Maybe I`m just not quite as clever as some!!! Thanks.
