unknown keyword in description file

Can someone please give me a quick fix. I have several grib files (forecasts from T+00 to T+96H) which I combine into one grib file via the cat command. grib2ctl runs ok. gribmap gives !!!!!MATCH throughout. However when I try to open the file in grads, I get:
Open Error: unknown keyword in description file
The invalid description file record is
grib
the data file was not opened.

Is the error in the ctl or in the grib data file?
