sdfopen error in linux

Running gradsdods on Debian Linux, I get this invalid argument error with sdfopen:

 Config: v1.8SL11 32-bit little-endian readline sdf/xdf netcdf DODS-enabled latsprintim

 Issue 'q config' command for more information.

 Landscape mode? (no for portrait):  l
 GX Package Initialization: Size = 11 8.5
 ga-> sdfopen http://nomad3.ncep.noaa.gov:9090/dods/gfs/rotating/gfs_12z
 Scanning self-describing file:  http://nomad3.ncep.noaa.gov:9090/dods/gfs/rotating/gfs_12z
 nc_open failure:
 Invalid argument
 http://nomad3.ncep.noaa.gov:9090/dods/gfs/rotating/gfs_12z does not exist or isnot a netCDF file.

 Couldn't ingest SDF metadata.
 If this was an HDF-SDS file, try gradshdf.

 What is going wrong?
