tloop/aave problem

given the configurations
Config: v1.8SL9 32-bit big-endian readline sdf/xdf netcdf DODS-enabled
lats athena im/image-output printim
and also
Config: v1.9b4 32-bit big-endian readline sdf/xdf netcdf lats athena
printim (and v1.9b3)
(on the irix machine) I encounter the problem
Syntax Error:  Invalid Operand
  'temp6' not a variable or function name
Operation Error:  Error from aave function
Operation Error:  Error from tloop function
when executing the command
'define var = tloop(aave(var, x=1,x=144,y=1,y=90))  in the environment
with z dimension varying from (say) 10 to 17 and the time from 1 to 143,
when this statement is executed for (for this case) more than 13 files
(the script works for 12 files).

my question is - is there a buffer size limit, or some other limit in
grads that prompts this
behavior?
