Need ctl for HDF data file?

GrADS Users:

I tried to open the HDF data file using 'sdfopen', but it gives the error:

Scanning self-describing file:  NPP_VGT1_19980401.HDF
SDF file has no discernable X coordinate.

I tried with xdfopen also. But failed!

How should I open this file? Should I have create a ctl? I have never
worked with HDF using GrADS!! I am attaching the 'metadata' as well as
'xml' files.  If required, I can send all the file (it is 7.7 MB single
zip file, but HDF is 22 MB ) privately by e-mail. I have to work with
around two hundreds of such files.
