how can i deel with the "grib file format error" ? Thank you!

hello every body,
 I have some problems with the "gribmap" utility when processing my grib data.
 I use grib2ctl (v0.9.12.5p33k) making the control file, then "gribmap" to match:
                   gribmap -v -i 2001.ctl

answers are:
gribmap:  Scanning binary GRIB file(s):
gribmap:  Opening GRIB file /climate2/data/ERA40/era40_monthly/e4moda.sfc.2001

GRIB file format error
rc = 53

   Although all of the records are matched, "grib file format error" caused no index file, and I can't use GrADs making further analysis.
   I use "wgrib" to check my data, everything goes well. What's the matter ?
