building GrADS with printim support on 64-bit SuSE 9.1

Hello list!

I am trying to build GrADS (v1.9) on my 64-bit AMD Opteron machine.  I
am compile it fine and display fields, but i cannot get the binaries
built with printim support...!

command:
# configure --with-printim=yes

oputput:
<snip>
Check GrADS printim support...
checking gd.h usability... no
checking gd.h presence... no
checking for gd.h... no
- printim disabled (Warning: gxtran will not be built)
</snip>

How can I fix this?  Any run across this problem before?  I did a few
searches on the list, but could not find a good match for my problem...
