valid time in a grib file

 Does anyone know of a way to extract the valid time of a grib file and use
this in the title section? I'd like to place the valid time at the top of
the images I'm producing, so far I'm only able to pipe in something along
the lines of YYMMDDHH_FVV where VV is the valid time, i.e. F12, or F24 and
use that. I guess I could always physically add VV to the YYMMDDHH and
increment the DD and MM as appropriate, but I was thinking there might be a
better way? Maybe this info is already in the grib file and accessible by
GrADS?
