open NETCDF whit TEMPLATE options

If the files can individually be opened via sdfopen, have you tried:
        sdfopen 20010101.nc %y4%m201.nc #tsteps
where #tsteps is the total number of time steps in all the files put
together?  Whether you want a full path on the template argument depends
on the version.  1.9, at least the current version, requires the full path.
1.8 does not want the full path in the template argument.

If the individual files cannot be opened with sdfopen, then you can use
a template option in a xdfopen-style Data Descriptor File or a "dtype netcdf"
DDF (in 1.9) just as you would in any DDF.
