set defval

Dear experts:

I have a variable, VAR, defined over 2-D area (50x50), time varies from
t=1 to t=100.

For some reason I need to replace value of VAR at grid point i=20, j=20,
t=50

to do that I try

set t 50
set defval VAR 20 20 new_value

I was suprised to find that VAR is changed at x=20, y=20, t=1 instead of
t=50 (as common wisdom suggests).

What is wrong?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
