Problem solved with one shot thanks to your hint to use the
opengrads supplementary libararies which are<br>
officially supported. I just downloaded

ran the build and then configured GrADS to use the local build
directory for all its needed libraries.<br>
Now it is all up and running with all the functionality enabled.<br>
