The numbers in the YDEF statement are read by the strtod() routine, the GrADS code looks for space or /t (tab) in between, and it returns errors if it finds /n, /0, or /r. It may matter whether you're using windows or unix, and it may also matter if you are using 1.9. I would also try creating a new descriptor, not editing the old one, in a brand new file.
