Dear Mubashar,

Yes, you cannot open MODIS hdf file directly using sdfopen. In order to deal with MODIS data, there are some steps that you need to follow. Some of the steps can be done using a specific software, and some can be done using command line.

From your hdf file you can use Modistool which will help you to mosaic and subset your data. In this step, you need to define some parameters such as the input file, choosing the appropriate band, defining your study area (by inputting the latitude and longitude UL and LR corner), output file, resampling type, the output projection type, the output pixel size (depending on the resolution of your data). Then you can create a cdl file using hdfdump command and from this cdl file, one can create a netcdf file which you can open using grads. But for this last step, you need to create a header file and the coordinate file.

Hope this can give you an idea of what you should do.

Best regards,

Serge

I know that GrADs need a control/descriptor (.ctl) file if it is unable to open it directly using sdfopen utility. If some one already worked with MODIS data then his/her reply will be useful.
