Try adding "OPTIONS byteswapped" to your *.ctl file.
x86 uses a different byte order.

We are currently trying to compile GrADS for weather work on a
Sun Microsystems Ultra60 running Gentoo Linux. The current version
(1.9b4) compiles without issue using Len Makin's source modification
(dated Wed, 26 Oct 2005 found on LISTSERV) to make the gdCompareInt
function work within gxhpng.c. Before using his fix we did experience
a failed make with undefined references to gdCompareInt().

However, now that the source compiles this is only half of the problem
we are currently experiencing. When using GrADS, we get images that
are all red or various other anomalies produced by gradsc. We have
confirmed that the data is good by testing it on other servers (using
x86 binaries) that we were graciously allowed access to for testing.
Obviously we must compile through source as no linux binaries for
sparc64 are available.

The images currently produced incorrectly can be seen here: <a

Or others in the same directory: <a

Does anyone know what might cause these issues? I've tried looking
through LISTSERV to no avail and other sources as well.
