Ah, here it is -- The <dataset> in gds.xml must be have
format="nc"
-- this tells the GDS to use gradsnc instead of gradsc when opening
this file. GrADS classic can't open a netcdf file. Also, you can
remove the das entry -- it's not neceessary unless mercator_test.das
exists and contains additional attributes you want to include.
