[gradsusr] [EXTERNAL] [BULK] GrADS on M1/M2 Mac

As others have mentioned, use XQuartz 2.8.4 or earlier.   I installed GrADS using MacPorts.  I haven’t noticed any issues once I downgraded XQuartz.

Hi GrADS User Forum,

(I wasn't sure this forum was still alive, but I see there's been some recent traffic, so it seems there's still a heartbeat!)

Has anyone successfully run GrADS on a Mac with the M1 or M2 processor?  With a lot of help from my sysadmin, I got it built, but the GUI graphics plotting is messed up (sorry for the unscientific description), with only contour labels appearing (without accompanying contour lines) being one of many seemingly random and show-stopping graphics glitches.  Output to pdf via gxprint/printim is unaffected.  But it's the interactive aspects of GrADS that make it so useful, so having to use gxprint/printim to see what's actually plotted is obviously not convenient.

Curiously, even if I run GrADS remotely on a machine that has a properly working version, the operation of GrADS on the M1/M2 Mac suffers from the same graphics issues (I know it's working properly on the remote machine because the strange issue is absent if I connect to the remote machine from an Intel Mac).  This must point to an X11 issue on the M1/M2 Macs, as there is no other explanation I can fathom that would identically affect both local and remote GrADS behavior (the latter relies on X11 forwarding).   It seems that there's some aspect of the X11 libs that come with the M1/M2 Mac that aren't compatible with GrADS, regardless of whether GrADS is run locally or remotely.

I'd be grateful for any insights anyone can share!   Many thanks in advance!
