Hi,

Trying to plot a skew-t from GFS grib data using Robet Hart's excellent
Plotskew.gs function.

However, as the ZDEF levels start at 1000hPa, this is the level the skew-t
starts plotting from.

Can anyone advise how to plot the full skew-t, starting with surface
temperature and dewpoint?

Oops, that is a bug you found! 
That subroutine (gxdbb) was retired, but I neglected to completely purge it from other areas in the source code. I'll update my dev branch as soon as possible so you can grab a new copy of the source and rebuild.

I am very new to GrADS so I hope this is a simple issue to resolve, but the answer is eluding me I?m afraid. I am getting the error ?gadsdf: Error parsing time units in SDF file.? if I attempt to use sdfopen to open a netCDF file which is able to be successfully opened by other installations of GrADS used by others at our office. Below is the config output of my GrADS installation as well as the truncated ncdump of the netCDF file I?m attempting to open (though we are getting the same error for other netCDF files we?ve tried).

For reference this installation was done through a package install (on CentOS 7.9) and not compiled from source, but it is the same version of GrADS as the one that is working on the same files.

I tried to use the ncdump output you sent to generate a dummy file with that time axis information and got the following error from ncgen: NetCDF: Bad chunk sizes. Your time axis length is size 25, but there is also this attribute:
time:_ChunkSizes = 1024 ;
So maybe that is the source of the problem?

Also, I am not sure whether this is true in your case, but I have seen package install commands for other flavors of unix try to use udunits2 instead of udunits1 for GrADS.  I updated the API in GrADS version 2.2.2 to use udunits2, but all other versions are likely to have issues if they are linked with udunits2. In the old builds, all the dependent libraries are statically linked, so it?s a little difficult to know what versions are included in the executables. The ?q config? output is helpful, but doesn?t list every single dependent library. It is a little easier to know what you?re working with using the newer versions that are dynamically linked. If the package install puts all the supplibs in place for you, then you might be able to build GrADS 2.2.2 from source without too much trouble.

The easiest route might be to use a simple xdfopen-style descriptor file to provide the time axis information so GrADS doesn?t have to inspect the time metadata at all and you?ll bypass that parsing error entirely.

That subroutine (gxdbb) was retired, but I neglected to completely purge it from other areas in the source code. I'll update my dev branch as soon as possible so you can grab a new copy of the source and rebuild.

Hello,

I am trying to output an image to a format other than png.  I can create 
the png without any problem, but I can not create gif or jpg.  If I 
change the file extension to gif or jpg in my script, nothing is 
created.

Here is the line in my script I am using to create the image...

'printim C:\xampp\htdocs\weather\models\20210313\HRRR-SNOW24.png x1024 
y768'

I also tried using gxprint instead of printim, but the result was the 
same.  I am using grads 2.2.1

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Jason,

The GrADS documentation (
http://cola.gmu.edu/grads/gadoc/gradcomdgxprint.html) states the JPG and
GIF options are not supported by the Cairo library.  Printim is an alias
for gxprint.  PNG is now the only supported image format, but you might
consider one of the vector graphic options.  You could also try using
ImageMagick to convert to JPG or GIF.  Perhaps another GrADS user can
assist, since I have no experience with that.

Hello again, Jason--

I did some checking on my system (linux) and saw it had ImageMagick, so I
found it simple to convert from PNG to JPG or GIF, in a script for example:

'gxprint testpic.png x960 y720'
'!convert testpic.png testpic.gif'

Where "convert" is the ImageMagick command-line tool.  By the way, convert
can also be used for a host of other options.  From GrADS, if you have the
application, you could enter !convert --help to see the various options.
Otherwise, see https:/imagemagick.org for more information.

Perhaps the solution is to use the "convert" command:
convert -units PixelsPerInch figure.png -resamble 300 figure.tiff
It will even increase the density to 300 dpi.

with Grads and noticed that they changed the model and data files on 
March 22nd, so things like plotting wave forecast maps and ensembles are 
now broken.

I have to rewrite a bunch of our code the downloads and processes the 
data some of which is GrADS scripts.

Yes, the WW3 wave data is now part of the new GFSv16 upgrade...

Specific to the wave model is this: 
https://polar.ncep.noaa.gov/waves/Waves_Changes.pdf

All URLs and filenames have been changed, and some of the grids have 
been discontinued (ak_4m, at_4m and wc_4m) which is a disaster.

I don't know what they were thinking but this isn't an upgrade in my case.

I have installed GrADS on my Windows pc. As I was trying to plot the data
from model.ctl file, I got this error:

and data sources . you can browse variable in the Opendap link for GFS 0.25
degree

https://nomads.ncep.noaa.gov/dods/gfs_0p25/gfs20210325/gfs_0p25_18z.info
using this link you can browse variables in the data set and pick any
changes.

My scripts all work using OPENDAP data. Although yesterday there were some
connection issues for OPENDAP and I have got a drop in functionality where
you have 2 open data sets.

But variable haven't changed . maybe that is the case with other datasets?

go with the image, but all the examples that I try interactively in

My idea here is to create the world file which in basically 6 floats 
written one per line in the file.

I'm obviously not doing something wrong here.

Ok, to answer my own question, I was able to get this to work using a 
script as follows:

Hi all,
Just sharing info from NOAA as many of you might be impacted.


There is a major network issue at our College Park data center. This is causing the FTP connectivity drops. Unfortunately, this same issue has also taken down the listserv that we use to send out updates. Therefore we haven't been able to send regular emails like we usually do during times of crisis. Multiple teams are working to get service restored, but we don't have an ETA at this time. Data will remain available on NOMADS, as that service runs out of our other data center. 

Here's the original problem statement:

Just to let you know, the ftp site where all this info is supposed to come from is at best unstable and at time unuseable.

Sometimes it's fine and other times it times out and does not respond or at best responds very slow. This situation started over the weekend and continues today.
